Wearing of the Badge / Uniform

On-Duty Employees. Uniformed employees shall wear their official Department-issued badge on the outermost garment of their uniform. Officers wearing approved garments and accessories may display a facsimile badge instead. Plainclothes employees shall wear their official issued ID card so it is readily accessible for presentation to members of the public.


WHO SHALL WEAR UNIFORM. All employees regardless of rank shall wear the prescribed uniform and personal equipment during their tours of duty.

EXEMPTIONS TO WEARING UNIFORMS. The following officers are exempted from wearing the prescribed uniforms - Command officers; and, Undercover and plainclothes assignment officers.

Accessories

BASEBALL CAP. Officers wearing the Class B / C uniform or the jumpsuit may choose to wear a black baseball cap with the SASPA logo.

COLD WEATHER HAT. Officers may choose to wear a black fleece cap during inclement weather.

DUTY BELT. Officers may choose to wear a duty belt. It shall be nylon, black in color, with a plastic buckle or a black leather belt, with silver buckle and silver pouch buttons.

Note: Officers may choose to attach black leather pouches directly to their pants belt.

EARPIECE. Officers may choose to wear an earpiece.

GLOVES. Black leather or knitted gloves may be worn for inclement weather. Gloves in solid, muted colors may be worn in situations where extra protection is required. Nitrile gloves may be worn when providing first aid, or collecting evidence.

HELMETS. Officers may wear riot helmets during major incidents.

HOLSTER. Officers assigned to armed details shall wear the polymer retention holster attached to their belt. Officers wearing the jumpsuit may choose to wear the drop leg holster.

JACKETS. Officers may choose to wear a department-issued jacket during inclement weather, or during cold periods of time.

PLATE CARRIER / EXTERNAL ARMOUR. Officers assigned to armed details may choose to patrol in a plate carrier / external armor. It shall be black in color and bear the text "CORRECTIONS" and "SASPA". If the situation calls for it, corrections officers may choose to don the same plate carrier.

Note: A Tac Alert does not give automatic permission for officers to wear plate carriers/external armour, unless assigned to armed detail.

POLO. Corrections officers conducting training or office duties may choose to wear a polo shirt instead of a Class B / C shirt. It shall be black in color and bear the SASPA badge facsimile and "CORRECTIONS" lettering.

SHOULDER / CHEST MIC. Officers may choose to wear a shoulder or chest mic for their radio.

TASER. Officers assigned to armed detail may choose to utilize a taser. It shall be yellow in color.

ZIPTIES. During major incidents, officers may choose to wear extra ziptie cuffs on their belt.

Uniform Types

Class A

Shall be worn by any officer attending a formal event.

May be worn by officers conducting field activities.


SHIRT. Long sleeve shirt to be worn with the tie. 

PANTS. Green duty pants with two yellow stripes.

FOOTWEAR. Black boots.

BELT. Officers attending a formal event shall omit a duty belt or pouches. Officers conducting field activities may wear a duty belt or pouches, as prescribed

Class B / C Uniform

May be worn by officers conducting field activities.


SHIRT. Long sleeve or short sleeve shirt, with open collar. Alternatively, Officers may choose to wear an appropriate polo shirt when conducting training or are assigned to office duties.

PANTS. BDU style pants in ranger green color.

FOOTWEAR. Black boots.

BASEBALL CAP. An approved baseball cap may be optionally worn.

DUTY BELT. Officers shall wear a duty belt with this uniform. It shall nylon, black in color, with a plastic buckle.

Jumpsuit

The jumpsuit may only be worn in non-public contact posts or assignment. (Note: Wardens shall apply discretion and apply the non-public contact standards in assessing whether a Class A or Class B / C uniform requirement applies to a particular post/assignment, whereby declaring it a public contact post.)

TOP. Green top with long sleeves and open collar. It shall bear an embroidered name tape and embroidered SASPA badge.

BOTTOM. The bottom section shall have identical color to the top section. It may be bloused.

DUTY BELT. Officers shall wear a duty belt with their jumpsuit. It shall be nylon, black in color, with a plastic buckle.

SASPA Crisis Response Team

Members of the SASPA Crisis Response Team (CTSOB) shall wear the Jumpsuit uniform. 

RIOT ARMOR. During major events, such as prison riots, CRT members may choose to wear padded armor with forearm guards, shin guards and a riot helmet. It shall be black in color and bear the SASPA patch, badge facsimile and "POLICE" lettering.

BALLISTIC EQUIPMENT. When deploying with firearms, CRT officers shall utilize balistic helmets and plate carriers with hard rifle rated inserts. The helmets shall be black or green in color. The plate carrier shall be black or green in color and bear "POLICE" or "CORRECTIONS" lettering.
