Wearing of the Badge/Uniform

On-Duty, Uniformed Employees. Uniformed employees shall wear their official Department-issued badge on the outermost garment of their uniform. 

On-Duty, Plainclothes Officers. On-duty, plainclothes officers shall wear their official Department-issued badge so it is readily accessible for presentation to members of the public.


WHO SHALL WEAR UNIFORM. All employees regardless of rank shall wear the prescribed uniform and personal equipment during their tours of duty.

EXEMPTIONS TO WEARING UNIFORMS. The following officers are exempted from wearing the prescribed uniforms - Command officers; and, Undercover and plainclothes assignment officers.

Accessories

CAMPAIGN HAT. May optionally be worn. Shall be brown in colour, and must display the NYSP badge.

COAT. Troopers may choose to wear a department-issued thick coat during inclement weather, or during cold periods of time. 

COLD WEATHER HAT. Troopers may choose to wear a black fleece cap during inclement weather. 

EARPIECE. Troopers may choose to wear an earpiece.

EXTERNAL ARMOUR. Troopers shall not patrol while wearing external armour. During situations where extra protection is needed, deputies may put on external armour. Shall be dark in colour, and must display "POLICE".

GLOVES. Black leather or knitted gloves may be worn for inclement weather. Gloves in solid, muted colors may be worn in situations where extra protection is required. Nitrile gloves may be worn when providing first aid, or collecting evidence. 

HELMETS. Troopers may carry a ballistic helmet in their patrol vehicle for situations which require extra ballistic protection. Troopers may wear riot helmets during riots/major public order situations. Ballistic helmets shall be dark in colour.

HIGH VISIBILITY VEST. Troopers shall wear a reflective safety vest while working in the roadway.

Note: A reflective safety vest is not required when an deputy conducts a traffic stop.

HOLSTER. Unless specified, all deputies shall wear their black holster on their belt. 

JACKETS. Deputies may choose to wear a department-issued jacket during inclement weather, or during cold periods of time. 

SHOULDER / CHEST MIC. Deputies may choose to wear a shoulder or chest mic for their radio. 

SWEATER. Troopers may optionally wear a woolen sweater. It shall be navy blue in color and bear the NYSP patches.

TASER.  If a trooper chooses to utilise a taser, they shall use a black taser.

TRAPPER (AVIATOR) HAT. May optionally be worn alongside the Class B/C uniform during inclement weather. Shall be grey in colour, and must display the NYSP badge.

TURTLENECK. Deputies may choose to wear a department-issued turtleneck under their duty shirt during inclement weather. Shall be blue in colour, and must display "POLICE".

Uniform Types

Class A Uniform

Shall be worn by any trooper attending a formal event.

May be worn by troopers conducting field activities.


SHIRT. Long sleeve shirt to be worn with the tie. Shall be worn with the metal badge and name plate.

PANTS. Standard duty pants, cream in colour with a brown stripe.

FOOTWEAR. Black boots.

BELT. Black Basket Weave leather belt, with gold buckle and gold pouch buttons.

Class B / C Uniform

May be worn by troopers conducting field activities.


SHIRT. Long sleeve or short sleeve shirt, with open collar. Shall be worn with the metal badge and name plate.

PANTS. Standard duty pants, cream in colour with a brown stripe.

FOOTWEAR. Black boots.

BELT. Black Basket Weave leather belt, with gold buckle and gold pouch buttons.
