BLAINE COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT
Wearing of the Badge / Uniform
ON-DUTY, UNIFORMED EMPLOYEES. Uniformed employees shall wear their official department-issued badge on the outermost garment of their uniform. However officers in a Department-approved specialized uniform, (e.g., utility uniform) may wear a facsimile badge as described below.
Uniformed employees shall wear the official Blaine County Sheriff Patches on their shoulders wherever possible (SWAT Excepted).
ON-DUTY, PLAINCLOTHES OFFICERS. On-duty, plainclothes deputies shall wear their official Department-issued badge and ID card so it is readily accessible for presentation to members of the public.
WEARING OF THE UNIFORM. All employees regardless of rank shall wear the prescribed uniform and personal equipment during their tours of duty.
Note: Agency-wide exemptions to specific uniform policies may be granted by the Office of the Sheriff in exigent circumstances.
WEARING OF THE UTILITY UNIFORM. The Watch Commander may authorize the wearing of the Utility Uniform for patrol personnel. Typically this will be done only when wearing the field uniform is abnormally inconvenient.
WEARING OF THE SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT UNIFORM. The approved special assignment uniform may be authorized to be worn during a special assignment as a replacement for the field uniform with the approval of the respective division commander.
EXEMPTIONS TO WEARING UNIFORMS. The following deputies are exempted from wearing the prescribed uniforms - Sheriff; Executive Staff; Command staff; and, Undercover and plainclothes assignment deputies.
Accessories
BASEBALL CAP. May optionally be worn alongside the Field Uniform, Utility Uniform, Special Duty Uniform, or K-9 Uniform. The hat shall be green in color, and must display "BLAINE COUNTY SHERIFF" in gold text, or appropriate department insignia.
BEANIE. May optionally be worn with the Field Uniform, Utility Uniform, Special Duty Uniform, or K-9 uniform. The beanie shall be black in color and bear the text "SHERIFF" in green lettering.
BODYCAM. Bodycams shall be worn by Deputies; the older Coil Body 2 or newer Coil Body 3 is to be used.
Exemptions: Wearing of the bodycam is not required:
At the direction of Command;
For on-duty CTSOB, DB, and PCG assignments; and,
For other plainclothes assignments.
COAT. Deputies may choose to wear a department-issued thick coat during inclement weather, or during cold periods of time.
CYCLE HELMET. Shall be worn by deputies assigned to Bicycle Detail. Shall be black in color.
EARPIECE. Deputies may choose to wear an earpiece.
EXTERNAL ARMOUR. Deputies shall not patrol while wearing external armor. During situations where extra protection is needed, deputies may put on external armor. Shall be green in color, and must display "BCSD" or "SHERIFF."
Note: A Tac Alert does not give automatic permission for officers to wear plate carriers/external armor.
EXTERNAL CARRIER VEST (STAB VEST). Deputies shall not wear external carrier vests with the Field Uniform. Deputies may choose to wear external carrier vests with the Utility Uniform. External carrier vests shall be green in color, and must display "SHERIFF" as well as the BCSD badge.
EXTERNAL LOAD BEARING VEST. Deputies may choose to wear external load-bearing vests with the Field Uniform or the Utility Uniform. External load-bearing vests shall be olive-green in color, utilizing a taser, and must display "SHERIFF" and/or a facsimile or real BCSD badge. Facsimile patches stating "SERGEANT" or "K-9" are restricted to Sergeants and K9 respectively. Deputies who opt to wear the load-bearing vest may wear the Utility Uniform shirt with the Field Uniform.
GLOVES. Black leather or knitted gloves may be worn for inclement weather. Gloves in solid, muted colors may be worn in situations where extra protection is required. Nitrile gloves may be worn when providing first aid, or collecting evidence.
HELMETS. Deputies may carry a ballistic helmet in their patrol vehicle for situations which require extra ballistic protection. Deputies may wear riot helmets during riots/major public order situations. Ballistic helmets shall be green in color.
HIGH VISIBILITY VEST. Deputies shall wear a reflective safety vest while working in the roadway.
Note: A reflective safety vest is not required when an deputy conducts a traffic stop.
HOLSTER. Unless specified, all deputies shall wear a black retention holster on their belt or thigh.
Note: Deputies may choose to wear a basketweave holster so long as it matches with the belt type.
JACKETS. Deputies may choose to wear a department-issued jacket during inclement weather, or during cold periods of time. It shall be predominantly green in color.
PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE (PFD). May be worn during maritime operations.
PILOT HELMET. Pilots shall wear a flight helmet. Shall be white in color, and must display "BCSD" at the rear of the helmet.
SHOULDER / CHEST MIC. Deputies may choose to wear a shoulder or chest mic for their radio.
SHOULDER LOOP. Deputies assigned to Training Division may choose to wear a green shoulder loop embossed with gold thread on their right shoulder epaulette.
RAIN CLOTHING. Rain clothing shall be worn during such times as officers may be exposed to inclement weather. It shall consist of the following: Hood and; Coat or cape.
SWEATER. Deputies may optionally wear a woolen sweater. It shall be green in color and bear a facsimile BCSD badge.
TASER. If a deputy chooses to utilize a taser, they shall use a yellow taser.
TURTLENECK. Deputies may choose to wear a department-issued turtleneck under their duty shirt during inclement weather. Shall be black in color.
WINDBREAKER. Detectives and other plainclothes assignments may choose to wear a marked windbreaker to identify themselves as a member of the department. It shall be blue in color, bear the text "BLAINE COUNTY SHERIFF" and have the BCSD badge printed on. Detectives assigned to the Gang Unit shall wear the same windbreaker, but green in color.
ZIPTIES. During major public order situations, deputies may choose to wear extra ziptie cuffs on their belt.
UNIFORM TYPES
Dress Uniform
Shall be worn by any probationary deputy sheriff.
Shall be worn by any deputies attending a formal event.
May be worn by deputies conducting field activities.
SHIRT. Long sleeve tan shirt, worn with a green tie.
PANTS. Standard slack-style pants, green in color.
FOOTWEAR. Black in color boots.
HOLSTER. Black retention holster worn on the hip.
BELT. Basket weave belt, with silver buckle and silver pouch buttons.
Field Uniform
May be worn by deputies conducting field activities.
SHIRT. Long or short sleeve tan shirt, open collar.
PANTS. Standard slack-style or straight cargo-style pants, green in color.
FOOTWEAR. Black in color boots.
BELT. Basket Weave belt, with silver buckle and silver pouch buttons.
Note: Deputies may optionally wear the Nylon belt, or a Basket Weave belt with a plastic buckle and silver pouch buttons.
Motor Unit Uniform
Shall be worn by all motor unit deputies.
SHIRT. Class A, B, or C style tan shirt may be worn.
JACKET. Motor unit deputies may optionally wear a jacket. It shall be black in color, bear BCSD patches on both shoulders, and have the badge affixed to it.
PANTS. Olive in color motor unit pants with a yellow stripe shall be bloused and worn with knee-high boots.
Note: Deputies may optionally olive green in colour, not-bloused cargo pants a yellow stripe in lieu of the motor unit pants.
HELMET. All motor unit deputies shall wear the department-issued motor helmet.
GLOVES. Deputies shall wear black leather gloves.
K-9 Uniform
On-duty K9 Unit personnel may wear either the Utility uniform, or the K9 T-shirt uniform.
VERSION 1:
SHIRT. Long or short sleeved tan shirt, open collar, with embroidered facsimile badge and black embroidered name.
PANTS. Green BDU trousers, may be bloused.
FOOTWEAR. Black in color boots.
BELT. Basket Weave belt, with silver buckle and silver pouch buttons.
Note: Deputies may optionally wear the Nylon belt, or a Basket Weave belt with a plastic buckle and silver pouch buttons.
EXTERNAL ARMOR / VESTS. During high risk situations, K9 deputies may opt to wear a green plate carrier. It shall bear a patch with the Sheriff star on the front left hand side and 'SHERIFF K9' on the front right hand side, as well as the back side.
VERSION 2:
SHIRT. Black t-shirt or hoodie with facsimile shoulder patches, facsimile badge on left chest area and "SHERIFF K-9 UNIT" silk screened on the back may be worn.
JACKET. Deputies may opt to wear a plain black jacket during cold or inclement weather.
PANTS. Green BDU trousers, may be bloused.
FOOTWEAR. Black, tan or green in color boots.
BELT. No restriction.
HOLSTER. Deputies may opt to wear a thigh holster in lieu of the standard duty holster.
EXTERNAL ARMOR / VESTS. During high risk situations, K9 deputies may opt to wear a green plate carrier. It shall bear a patch with the Sheriff star on the front left hand side and 'SHERIFF K9' on the front right hand side, as well as the back side.
Air Support Jumpsuit
Shall be worn by any deputy assigned to the Air Support Division when operating an aircraft.
SUIT. Shall be green in color and bear the BCSD patches and a badge.
GLOVES. Pilots may wear nomex flight gloves
HELMET. All pilots shall wear the department-issued pilot helmet when airborne. It shall be white and bear the BCSD markings.
BELT. Pilots shall wear a plain black nylon belt with a plastic buckle.
Search and Rescue Coveralls
Shall be worn by deputies conducting Search and Rescue activities.
SHIRT. Green or orange coverall. It shall bear the embroidered badge and Search and Rescue patches.
PANTS. Green or orange coverall.
FOOTWEAR. Black boots.
BELT. Deputies shall wear their duty belt as prescribed, unless it would interfere with other equipment, such as abseiling gear or a harness.
HELMET. When conducting duties where a risk of head injury exists, deputies shall wear a bump helmet. It shall either be white in color and bear "SHERIFF" lettering together with a BCSD badge, OR red in color and bear "SEARCH AND RESCUE" lettering together with Mountain Rescue logo, OR orange and plain.
HOLSTER. A drop leg holster may be used.
OTHER EQUIPMENT. Search and Rescue Technicians may choose to equip themselves with other equipment which would aid them in successful accomplishment of their duties when wearing the Search and Rescue Technician Uniform. Such equipment includes, but is not limited to: equipment chest rig, abseiling gear or a rappelling harness.
Search and Rescue Tech Uniform
Shall be worn by deputies conducting Search and Rescue activities.
SHIRT. Tan or orange utility shirt. It shall bear the embroidered badge and name tape, BCSD patch with a Search and Rescue rocker and Search and Rescue patch.
PANTS. Green BDU pants, may be bloused.
FOOTWEAR. Black boots.
BELT. Deputies shall wear their duty belt as prescribed, unless it would interfere with other equipment, such as abseiling gear or a harness.
HELMET. When conducting duties where a risk of head injury exists, deputies shall wear a bump helmet. Special Assignment Uniform
Plain black tee shirt or Black or Tan polo shirt with embroidered facsimile badge and SHERIFF lettering. Black or green BDU Trousers.
Deputies may opt to wear a Fabric duty belt in lieu of the standard 'Sam Brown/Sally' duty belt.
Deputies may opt to wear a thigh holster in lieu of the standard duty holster, unless on bicycle detail.
Deputies assigned to bicycle detail shall wear a black bicycle helmet. They may optionally wear green shorts in lieu of the BDU trousers.
Deputies assigned to marine detail shall wear a orange personal flotation device (PFD).
Deputies may opt to wear a green outer patrol vest with the sheriff star on the front left hand side and 'SHERIFF' on the front right hand side.
SWAT Uniform
Olive green top and cargo pants, with similarly colored ballistic helmet and similarly colored body armor with 'SHERIFF' displayed on external body armor.
Shall be worn by SWAT deputies during tactical operations.
SHIRT. Green long sleeve combat shirt, bearing the subdued BCSD patches.
PANTS. Green tactical pants.
BODY ARMOR. Similarly colored external armor, which displays “SHERIFF" or "BCSD".
HELMET. Similarly colored ballistic helmet.
